The Development of Embroidery in America Candace Wheeler 9781147186703 Books Reviews

If you are a woman and an interior decorator, you are following in the steps of this vanguard, Candace Wheeler; for she is the first such woman to hit the scene big in the US. She authored many books and was one of the very few female artist exhibiting at the Chicago World Fair in 1893. She is as famous for designing textiles as she was in revolutionizing interior decoration a century ago. She still has an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

It's not her fault that you want to read a book on your kindle that leaves off the illustrations included in the original book. It was published in 1921 for heaven's sake! Either open up your purse strings and pop for the original book or look it up on the Gutenburg Project which publishes several of her works for free online. Some of 's offerings also have all the original text and illustrations.

Stop being so hard on older books...they're much more valuable than you indicate.
I was very disappointed to find no illustrations in this book. There is an index of illustrations and captions for illustrations on the appropriate pages but hmmmm, no illustrations. So if you can get the feel of handwork from text alone, this book will work for you. For me, I need the visual along with the words.
It is a bit too wordy, but good overall coverage. I do not want to get too wordy here either
This is a very old book and written very formally and at times can be dry to read. However the knowledge of the author is extensive and reliable. It is a good book to read if interested in the history of embroidery and I learned a lot of valuable information from it.
This edition sails under a false flag. It retypes the original text, but without ANY of the original illustrations (which the text refers to constantly).
This is an excellent presentation of the history of embroidery in America. The black and white illustrations are helpful and apropos.
